| YOUR FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM Fuel Injectors The fuel injection system on your vehicle typically consists of a single fuel injector for each engine cylinder and an ECU, or electronic control unit. The ECU monitors various sensor functions, such as how much oxygen is in the exhaust system, how far the accelerator pedal has been pushed and the speed of the engine. The injectors then get a signal from the ECU regarding the proper amount, and the timing of the fuel that is needed. Depending upon the information received, injectors spray a precise amount of fuel into the combustion chamber of each cylinder to maintain top engine efficiency. Moisture or dirt can contaminate fuel lines. Fuel filters help to keep out the contaminants but they can get clogged. It is important to have your fuel filter replaced when they become inefficient at filtering out contaminates. Our ASE Certified Technicians can determine when your fuel filter needs to be replaced. Fuel lines can also get moisture in them. This moisture can freeze, which can prevent your car from starting in the winter. Keeping your fuel tank filled during winter, and using a fuel additive to the fuel tank can help keep your fuel flow at efficient levels. If your engine idles roughly, you may have either one, or both of the following problems. Fuel injector gaskets can leak, or injectors can become clogged with carbon. Either of these problems is not good. Clogged injectors allow uneven or improper amounts of fuel into your engine’s cylinders, which affects combustion. ADVANCED AUTO REPAIR can help! Sometimes a fuel system treatment or cleaner will be able to keep injectors clear, but it is important to know how much, and how often to use these additives.
